Troubleshooting¶
Resolve common issues when connecting data, designing layouts, or previewing reports.

Find a quick fix for the problem you are seeing.
Connection problems¶
| Symptom | What to try |

| Test connection fails | Verify host, port, database name, and credentials; confirm VPN/firewall access |
| Database Browser empty | Confirm the connection is selected and the user has schema privileges |
| GeoServer / WMS / ArcGIS fails | Check the service URL, layer name, and authentication |

Query and parameter issues¶
| Symptom | What to try |

| Data Preview returns no rows | Relax filters; test SQL; confirm parameters have values |
| Parameter prompt errors | Ensure required parameters are filled; check cascading depends-on |
| Multi-value filter fails | Use $X{IN, …} style filters for multiple parameters |
Design and validation¶

| Validation warnings | Open the validation panel and resolve listed issues |
| Element missing in Preview | Confirm it is inside a band that prints; check print-when expressions |
| Overlapping content | Resize bands; reduce Detail height; check stretch settings |
Preview and map issues¶

| Preview will not start | Confirm JDK / Jasper runtime; save the report; review compile errors |
| Map shows a placeholder | Verify map SQL/connection; confirm map runtime components; simplify extent |
| Stale preview banner | Refresh Preview after design changes |

Tips¶
Tip
Reproduce with a minimal query and a single Text Field when isolating Preview failures.
Warning
Do not hand-edit generated .jrxml inside the project folder to “fix” Preview. Fix the design in Report Studio and save.
